Packaging Potatoes with Complete Packaging Lines

Denise Baths

Anyone who has ever stood in front of the potato aisle in a supermarket will see potatoes packaged in a wide variety of forms and sizes. Small packages, large packages, pillow bags, doy-style bags, or tray packaging—anything is possible. JASA offers the right solution for every packaging need.

Potato Packaging in All Shapes and Sizes

A few years ago, 5 and 10-kilogram packages were the norm. Today, packages ranging from 300 grams to about 1.5 kilograms are very popular. “Nowadays, there are many more different types of potatoes on the market. You also see more of the older potato varieties making a comeback,” explains Maikel van Wiggen, founder of JASA. “This means that consumers are varying their choices more, leading to a greater demand for smaller packages.” To meet this demand effectively, JASA offers customized turnkey solutions for every packaging requirement.

“Potatoes are sold in various types of packaging,” Maikel van Wiggen explains. “Some are packed in plastic bags, while others are in cardboard trays with plastic wrapping around them. For years, these were the only packaging solutions for potatoes, but now we can replace the plastic in both with paper: Bag-2-Paper™.”

Complete Solutions for Potato Packaging

JASA provides complete lines for packaging potatoes, from sorting machines to outfeed conveyors. “Depending on the customer's needs, we can deliver fully automated lines or semi-automated lines.” Using an industrial weigher, the previously sorted potatoes are weighed accurately. The potatoes are then packaged into the correct portions before the packaging is sealed. The packages are transported via an outfeed conveyor to the case packers or re-packaging machines before reaching the consumer.

Optical Sorting Machines for Potatoes

To ensure only the best potatoes reach the consumer, they are sorted by size and quality before the packaging process. JASA can assist with this as well. The Newtec Celox machine not only sorts by the correct size but also scans the potatoes for quality. Using optical cameras, the potatoes are analyzed and then accurately sorted. This process is incredibly fast and precise.

JASA Thinks Along with You

With so many possibilities, it’s helpful to have someone think along with you. There are not only multiple ways to package potatoes but also different methods to keep them fresh for longer in the packaging. This way, potatoes remain marketable and stay fresh for longer, reducing the risk of food waste. “Whether it involves packaging processed or unprocessed potatoes, JASA also advises on the type of packaging and how to maximize the shelf life of the potatoes. We work closely with you to understand your needs and possibilities before we set up the line.”

Multifunctional Lines for Potatoes

Multifunctionality is a key feature for JASA and its customers. “We want to make the machine as flexible as possible, so it can be used for multiple solutions and packaging types. Therefore, we ensure our machines can be adjusted quickly. Additionally, we can incorporate branching into the line. This makes it possible to fill both bags and trays, increasing the packaging capacity per minute. Depending on the chosen options, our lines process 25-100 packages per minute.”

Sustainable Potato Packaging

Several factors come into play when choosing the right turnkey solution. Creating a good working environment is essential. Which machines are suitable, and how can the complete line be optimized? Moreover, the desired type of packaging is considered, and naturally, it's important that the potatoes are preserved and neatly packaged. The flexibility of the machines also influences the choice. Furthermore, sustainable packaging has become a significant factor in selecting the right packaging solution.

With the focus on reducing plastic packaging, providing more sustainable solutions, and minimizing environmental pollution, the packaging industry faces new challenges. That's why JASA developed Bag-2-Paper™. These revolutionary paper packaging solutions are suitable for packaging unprocessed potatoes, among other things. Using a vertical packaging machine, the potatoes are packed in 100%* paper packaging, which can be easily recycled with regular paper waste after use.

Sustainable Tray Packaging for Potatoes

Do you package potatoes in a cardboard tray with plastic wrapping around it? JASA offers a recyclable solution for this as well. Our new cardboard sleeve provides a sustainable way to package potatoes. The sleeve ensures the potatoes are visible in the packaging without being removed. It’s perfect for unprocessed (baby) potatoes. This creates a solution that is 100% suitable for recycling.
